2014 Fresno Hunger Count: why we surveyed, how we did it and what we found
About Fresno Hunger Count
In 2012 the need for food relief in Fresno far exceeded the supply, but how much was needed was unknown. Discussions between Community Food Bank CEO Andy Souza and Fresno Hunger Count Founder Philip Erro led to the concept of conducting a food shortage survey to document the amount of food needed. With help from Mr. Souza, Mr. Erro organized Fresno Hunger Count and sent surveyors into the community. Fresno Hunger Count Surveyors interviewed heads of food insecure households one-on-one using a questionnaire and recorded answers carefully to assure the validity of the data. They also accurately wrote the addresses of respondents so that hunger severity could be reported according to location. The California State University, Chico Geography and Planning Department provided the Geographical Information System software to be able to validate addresses and enable geographically based reports. Our food shortage reports are a public service.
